2022 How Does Your Garden Grow?

2021 was a bust in most places; maybe this new year we can do better?

2021 was a complete failure for my garden due to extreme heat and months of thick smoke that blocked out the sun. I am distressed and dismayed at all the time, labor and money I spent with little to no return. Apples baked on the trees, no grapes, stunted, small potato's, cooked tomatoes on the vine combined with blossom drop from melons and cucumbers. I managed to rescue some corn and picked plums before the heat wave cooked them.
The weather has been nice for the last 2 weeks with 60-degree highs, so I have been busy cleaning up my garden and getting ready for the spring planting. Maybe mother nature will cooperate this year.

2022 is another shaky garden year due in part to the late spring which delayed planting by a full month. I counted 200 apricots that turned black from 32 degree temperatures, then fell to the ground. Several apple trees also failed to produce any fruit and the frost also terminated the cherries. Grapes and potato's did good and we just picked the first tomato's and cucumbers this week. Plums are coming on strong and will be ready in a couple days. There is no comparison between store bought tomato's and homegrown. It is worth the effort. Have decided to log the eastern fenceline to let in the morning sun on the garden and build a hoop house to start seeds in and get a head start on planting in the spring. Also planted a Turkish fig tree and its doing good.

I picked the last 2 cukes and 2 small tomato's last week and thats it for this years garden. Two years in a row I have had bad weather and low yields. Potato crop did good this year but there were no apricots or apples due to a late frost that killed the developing fruit. There was no fruit harvested anywhere in this area. I am going to widen 2 raised beds for more crops since I have the room to do this, and log the eastern fence line to let in more morning sunlight.
